The Prime Minister then ordered Aminullah Chaudry to divert PK 805, the flight on which Musharraf was returning home, away from Karachi and preferably out of the country. As the Civil Aviation Ordinance permitted the Prime Minister to divert any commercial flight from its specified route, and the Director General to close down any airport, Aminullah denied the use of Karachi and its designed alternative Nawabshah to PK 805. When the pilot of PK 805 informed the tower that he was running short of fuel, he was cleared to land at Nawabshah. But are ordinary Pakistanis extremists? And what explains how Pakistanis think? Much of the current work on extremism in Pakistan tends to study extremist trends in the country from a detached position—a top-down security perspective, that renders a one-dimensional picture of what is at its heart a complex, richly textured country of 200 million people. In this book, using rigorous analysis of survey data, in-depth interviews in schools and universities in Pakistan, historical narrative reporting, and her intuitive understanding of the country, Madiha Afzal gives the full picture of Pakistan’s relationship with extremism. The author lays out Pakistanis’ views on terrorist groups, on jihad, on religious minorities and non-Muslims, on America, and their place in the world. The views are not radical at first glance but are riddled with conspiracy theories. Afzal explains how the two pillars that define the Pakistani state—Islam and paranoia about India—have led to a regressive form of Islamization in Pakistan’s narratives, laws, and curricula. These, in turn, have shaped its citizens’ attitudes.

Afzal traces this outlook to Pakistan’s unique and tortured birth. She examines the rhetoric and the strategic actions of three actors in Pakistani politics—the military, the civilian governments, and the Islamist parties—and their relationships with militant groups. She shows how regressive Pakistani laws instituted in the 1980s worsened citizen attitudes and led to vigilante and mob violence. The author also explains that the educational regime has become vital in shaping citizens’ thinking. How many years one attends school, whether the school is public, private, or a madrassa, and what curricula are followed all affect Pakistanis’ attitudes toward terrorism and the rest of the world. In the end, Afzal suggests how this beleaguered nation—one with seemingly insurmountable problems in governance and education—can change course.

This is a blow-by-blow account of the Imran Khan regime 2018-2022 that promised so much and delivered so little.

The “IK story” began in 2011 when Pakistan’s military establishment determined to secure a political alternative to the dynastic Bhutto-Sharif regimes that had alternated for over two decades. The “IK story” began in 2011 when Pakistan’s military establishment determined to secure a political alternative to the dynastic Bhutto-Sharif regimes that had alternated for over two decades. In 2014, the military prodded Imran to launch his narrative of “35 punctures”, a reference to the alleged “theft” of the 2013 elections that brought Nawaz Sharif to office. Winding its way through various long marches and dharnas to destabilise the Sharif regime, it roped in the Supreme Court under two Chief Justices of Pakistan, Saqib Nisar and Asif Khosa, to knock out Nawaz and culminated in the 2018 elections that were blatantly rigged to “select” Imran into office. This book charts Imran’s rise and fall, starting from the “Same Page” narrative of a firm partnership between Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Army Chief, Qamar Javed Bajwa, that propped up his regime, to the time in 2021 when the same doctrine was abandoned after it became an acute embarrassment for the military and its chief. Interwoven into the fabric of Imran’s demagogic politics was the ruthless ambition of two generals, one of whom sought an extension in tenure (COAS General Bajwa) and the other an elevation to the post of army chief (DG-ISI General Faiz Hameed). In the event, this unholy team couldn’t manipulate the system to achieve its ends. This book charts the monthly miscalculations of Khan’s regime in the summer of 2021 after the transfer of General Faiz Hameed from the ISI to the Peshawar Corps, enabling the combined opposition to cobble the wherewithal of a successful No-Confidence Motion in April 2022 that finally felled Imran Khan. Using a wealth of contemporary records and archival material, he traces Jinnah's journey from an Indian nationalist to a Muslim communitarian, and then from a Muslim nationalist to, finally, Pakistan's all-powerful head of state. How did the ambassador of Hindu Muslim unity become the inflexible votary of the two-nation theory? Did Jinnah envision Pakistan as a theocratic state? What was federalism? In this sixth book of his, The Reluctant Republic, he ventures even deeper to investigate the history of statist-nationalist narratives in Pakistan and how the country's diverse ethnic, sectarian and sub-sectarian groups responded to these narratives. Paracha posits that statist experiments in this context have largely failed to build a cohesive and confident nation-state which is always in fear of coming apart. As is often the case in his books, parallel to investigating the faultlines that crisscross Pakistan's existence as a nation-state, Paracha simultaneously weaves a counter-narrative. He challenges and deconstructs the statist narratives to provide a constructive alternative to experiments and narratives that have been unable to shape a unified and progressive nation-state but continue being repeated with minor modifications. Paracha builds a compelling case to conclude that the state of Pakistan must come to terms with the fact that the formulation of a civic-nationalism - or a nationalism based on a nation of diverse 'micro-nations' joined to an integrated economy rather than to a dominant ethnic group or a specific faith - is the country's only way out of the vicious cycle it seems to be stuck in. Since 9/11, the selective cooperation of president General Pervez Musharraf in sharing intelligence with the United States and apprehending al Qaeda members has led to the assumption that Pakistan might be ready to give up its longstanding ties with radical Islam. But Pakistan's status as an Islamic ideological state is closely linked with the Pakistani elite's worldview and the praetorian ambitions of its military. This book analyzes the origins of the relationships between Islamist groups and Pakistan's military, and explores the nation's quest for identity and security. It tracks the negotiations to breaking point, compelling her to nominate her "own man", Farooq Leghari, to the Presidency. It records Nawaz Shun cunning ways to drive a wedge between Leghari and Bhutto, which eventually led the former to use the 8th Amendment to sack the latter.

The major policy issues that preoccupied Benazir Bhutto in her second term were nuclear proliferation, MQM terrorism in Karachi and conflict in Kashmir. What resistance means, of course, depends upon the particular context. His canvas is super-sized, spanning continents and drawing examples as different as the Bhakti movement in India to the birth of Protestantism in Europe. But most of the book deals with forms of resistance on the Indian subcontinent about which, quite naturally, the author has the most to say and in some cases has intimate knowledge of.

By excerpting particularly poignant parts of Urdu novels and short stories, the author brings before us the wealth of Urdu literature -both prose and poetry - created under the shadow of military rule. This deals with how West Pakistanis sneered at and trod upon Bengalis, the plight of Biharis who had fought for Pakistan but were abandoned, the resistance literature that Zia-ul-Haq's oppression gave birth to, how the Baloch have struggled for their rights under different governments, and so much more. There are well-deserved eulogies to those Pakistanis who have stood up to the powers-that-be and refused the ideological straitjacket. Among them are Aslam Azhar, Fahmida Riaz, Kishwar Naheed, and Sobho Gianchandani. The author's impressive breadth of reading and familiarity with left-wing politics is most evident here and therefore, in my opinion, this is perhaps the strongest part of this book.

To question received wisdom is not in our culture or habit. Some will question the author's patriotism but he knows how to answer them: patriotism is a farce if it does not involve loving all people, including the disabled, the transgender, and the other marginalized peoples.
