Author: Arthur Conan Doyle

Declared unfit for military life after an injury in the Anglo-Afghan War, Dr. Watson returns to London. He is hunting for a thrifty rented place when a friend introduces him to Sherlock Holmes, an amateur detective, who is looking for someone he can share lodgings with to split the rent. They find each other agreeable to live with and rent a place. One day, Holmes receives a telegram from Scotland Yard inviting him to visit a crime scene where a man lies murdered with “RACHE” (German word for revenge) written in blood on one of the walls. What will Holmes uncover when he applies his unparalleled logic to solve his first case? A Study in Scarlet was first published in 1887. It enjoys a dual status in crime fiction. Not only is it the doorway into the realm of Sherlock Holmes, but also into the ever-expanding world of crime fiction.
