He is long retired but the advent of the Great War forces him to abandon his retirement for once for his country s sake. His heroics in the "German War" appear in the title story "His Last Bow." All other stories recount his adventures before the age of retirement. This is what his chronicler Dr. John H. Watson reveals in his short preface for the book. Like all Holmes s works, these stories have also been adapted and readapted for different media.
