Description

The Two Towers picks up where The Fellowship of the Ring left off, following the breaking of the Fellowship. The story is divided into two main parts:

  1. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursue the Uruk-hai who have kidnapped Merry and Pippin. Along the way, they ally with the Riders of Rohan and become involved in the war against the evil wizard Saruman, whose stronghold is the tower of Orthanc in Isengard.

  2. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam continue their journey to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. They are joined (and guided) by the strange and conflicted creature Gollum, who once possessed the Ring and is obsessed with getting it back. Their path takes them through perilous lands and brings them closer to the heart of enemy territory.

The title "The Two Towers" refers to Orthanc in Isengard and Barad-dûr, the dark tower of Sauron in Mordor. These two towers symbolize the growing threat of evil and the alliance between Sauron and Saruman.
